An expectorant: An expectorant cough syrup should help with a "chesty" cough to help breakup mucous. You could use one with a cough suppressant if the cough is bothersome, sleep disturbing or painful. Mucinex (guaifenesin) or Mucinex (guaifenesin) dm or Robitussin or Robitussin-DM would be good choices or their house brand equivalent and no problem with asthma or underactive thyroid.

Most every one: Most over the counter cough medicines are safe to take with the above problems but make sure you read the label and ask the pharmacist.
