A member asked:

My wife, 33weeks pregnant. diagnosed with itp. given prednisone then now ivig. if still failed, then bone marrow. is that a big risk? now 36weeks

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: Itp can occur late in pregnancy. Performing a bone marrow on a pregnant patient in experienced hands is typically not a great risk. I do not use sedation, but topical numbing agent with numbing of the top of the bone and skin. Well done risks are pain, low risk of bleeding and low risk of infection. Many times, if patients fail prednisone, ivig we use rituxan (rituximab). Make sure itp diagnosis is correct.
