Why was the test : Done? The psa value is within normal limits for a 60 yr old man. However, psa is not recommended as a cancer screening test. The findings require a discussion with the doctor who ordered the test. For more information see this site. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/detection/psa.

Probably OK: Many urologists use a level of 4.5 as a cutoff for men in the 7th decade. Important factors to consider are overall health, exam findings (size and texture of prostate), and psa history if available. If the psa was much lower recently, this may be a significant change. There is likely little harm in proceeding carefully and repeating psa later if needed and biopsy only if a clear reason to do so.
