Depends on type: In most cases, the first metatarsal bone is cut and realigned, fixated with pins or screws. Enlarged portion of bone is cut or shaved down. Soft tissue suuch as tendons, ligaments and capsule may also be released or modified.

What procedure?: There are several ways to surgically correct a bunion, and your surgeon will choose the procedure based on how severe the deformity and pain are. Some require a soft tissue release, others involve a bone cut and a screw.
