A member asked:

Is bunion surgery safe? what are common complications?

3 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

Generally yes: Surgery for correcting bunions are commonly performed on an outpatient basis and can provide good results. Like any other surgery, complications such as infection, swelling, pain, recurrence of the deformity, limited motion , excessive scarring can sometimes arise. Talk to your foot surgeon about this. Provide a detailed medical history, and be compliant with all of the postoperative course.

Yes it is: Like any other surgery no more no less. Fewer than 10 percent of patients experience complications from bunion surgery. Possible complications can include infection, recurrence of the bunion, nerve damage, and continued pain.
