Several ways : If back pain is worse with activity & better with rest, does not affect sleep & is not associated with any weight loss, or any fever, chills or sweats then you can try some things on your own otherwise see a doctor. First, stop smoking if you do so. Start exercising daily including stretching & cardio workouts which can be fast walk to begin with but start slowly. Yoga is good for mind & back.

Typically disc herniations will resolve on their own as soon as 3-6 weeks or as late as 6-9 months. Just depends on how you take care of yourself, exercise, anti-inflammatories, tylenol (acetaminophen) and if you need to lose weight that will help immensely.
