Nervous habits: Many normal children have nervous habits. Common is rubbing nose, sniffing, clearing throat, as well as biting nails, picking nose , etc. Grimace and head toss and blinking are also common. These usually become less prominent with time. Rare cases may progress and become disruptive. These may meet criteria for tourette syndrome, but still may be able to be managed without medication.

Tic disorders: Can be transient, chronic or tourette's. A prevalence study showed that 6% of elementary- -school -aged children exhibited tics over a year of observation. 5% were transient tics; <1% were tourette's. Mild tics may not require medication management. Chronic motor & vocal tics of tourettes are more severe. They often impact physical, emotional & social functioning. These require medication.
