Depression/Dementia: These two illnesses do not cause cause each other, but can overlap. Also depression can be mistaken for dementia because the person may have such psychomotor slowing s/he may not be able to process things well. In the past some have referred to this as "depressive pseudodementia." in addition, some medicines used to treat depression may impact cognition in certain people.

Symptoms overlap: Depression can be severe enough that it looks like dementia. Alternatively a significant depression can occur just before the onset of dementia or somone with dementia can have some depressed symptoms. A geriatric psychiatrist can help sort through this.
