TMD: The most important question you must ask yourself is: is the pain associated with a hearing loss? If there is no hearing loss, fullness or pressure in the ear, the pain is most likely arising from the jaw joint or the jaw muscles. The pain occurs because you are lying on your side and the pressure of the pillow on the side of your face may be the cause of the pain. Check with your dentist.

Rule out dental pain: I recently answered this question. But I am happy to repeat my suggestion. There are many structures at the side of the face. The ear is only one. The jaw joint, the jaw muscles, teeth, nerves and blood vessels are located at the side of the face but people always assume that pain at the side of the face is coming from the ear. If there is no hearing loss, think of dental or jaw muscles.
