Sleep & weight loss: Losing both sleep and weight are 2 "typical" symptoms of major depression. There are several more: loss of interest, sad mood, and loss of energy, etc. "agitated" depression shows more pacing & hand-wringing. In "atypical" depressions, the person wants to sleep and eat much more than usual. Specific antidepressant choices can be tailored to the symptom picture you have.
