Varies.: If there's chronic pain that's severe, a doctor might prescribe daily opioid - a long acting agent and then a short acting one for breakthrough. With flare ups of the pain, i've seen people use Amitriptyline along with opioids or nsaids, coupled with a short hospital stay where the person doesn't eat (so they don't stimulate the pancreas).
