Depends: Fever, by itself, is rarely harmful. What you need to be concerned about is: what is causing the fever. A temp of 39.6 could be from a cold or could be from meningitis. If your child is acting "sick" then you should call your doctor for further advice. If he is running around and acting fine without any other symptoms, then it should be safe to just monitor her for a day or two.
