Statement confusing: I would worry less about fever & more about fluid status & activity. Fever has benefits during an illness by speeding blood flow & circulating bodies healing factors. If the kid is taking fluids well, urinating at least every 6hr & playful at times the fever is a minor issue. If the kid is not taking fluids& lethargic most of the time i would arrange to have the kid seen today.

Fever: As you mentioned, you should alternate the proper doses of Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen every 3 hours for pain and fever. You may also give your child a lukewarm bath and put cool compresses on the forehead and soles of the feet. If fever is still not controlled, check the child's doses based on a current weight. If all else fails, go to the emergency room or call your pediatrician.

Don't look...: ...At the temperature; look at the child. Fever under 106 does not harm the child, but overdosing on meds might. Dehydration is a bigger problem; if you have a choice between a teaspoon of fever medicine and a glass of water, give the water. Emergency room is for children with seizures, severe vomiting, severe lethargy or irritability, breathing difficulty - not for a number on the thermometer.
