Yes: Hand foot and mouth disease is a group of symptoms caused by the coxackie a virus. This virus is a member of the enterovirus family. These viruses are very good at speading. The virus takes about 5-7 days to start showing symptoms, then virus is being shed by the host (your kid) for another 7-10 days. Practicaly speaking, it is very difficult to prevent spread.

Contagious?: Hand foot and mouth disease is a common childhood viral infection which lasts 7 to 10d, first with fever and then sores in the mouth/throat and rash on hand and feet. It is highly contagious and spread via stool oral route requiring kids to stay home from school. Your question is an important one! hfmd lasts 7 to 10 days and kids are most contagious the first week even after resolution of fever.
