A member asked:

How long should a child stay home with hand, foot, mouth disease? no fever or blisters, just somewhat annoying bumps. i dont want school to freak out but also heard keeping home doesnt help stop the spread. fever was 5 days ago?

The general rule for school age kids is to keep them out until the fever is gone and there are no evident mouth sores. The virus continues to remain in their poop but that is mainly an issue in day care centers where diaper changes can lead to cross contamination.

No specific treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease. Supportive treatment. Self limiting within 7-10 days.
