Careful which type: Magnesium citrate is a good bowel prep. Magnesium oxide is a good relaxant. It is not designed to put you to sleep, but it can help relax tense muscles. One or two pills of 400 mg each per day should have some positive effect within one week to 10 days.

May not help: As is the case for almost all vitamins and supplements, a little is all you need. While it's true that deficiencies cause problems, excess won't improve any function, and it frequently is detrimental. See your doctor, and have your magnesium level checked before initiating any treatment.
