Yes: Depending on how much thyroid tissue is removed, patients may need thyroid hormone replacement after surgery. Sometimes only half of the gland is removed, for example if there is concern a nodule is a cancer. These patients may not need thyroid hormone replacement. Also with goiter sometimes some of thyroid gland is left behind on purpose. More recently the entire gland is frequently removed.

Yes: A complete thyroidectomy in which all of the tissue is removed will result in a reduced thyroid hormone in the body (zero). But sometimes only part of the thyroid gland is surgically removed, and in these instances sometimes thyroid hormone levels stay normal.
