What can be done for an anxious feeling?

8 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

Anxious feelings : Happen when your mind registers a threatening or intimidating future event and your body prepares for action (fight/flight). You can change your thoughts about the triggering situation, learn to calm your body's reaction, or deal with the situation to make it less threatening. If anxiety is a pattern or particularly distressing, talk to a psychologist or counselor.

Stay active: Exercise is a great way to relieve stress. Your body releases endorphins during exercise, which can help you feel calm. If you exercise 30 - 60 minutes a day, your stress levels can improve. When stressed, take 5 slow, deep breaths with your eyes closed, then roll your shoulders forward 5 times, then back 5 times. This will slow your heart rate and release tension in your neck and shoulders.

Breathing exercises: I agree with my colleagues about exercise and cognitive strategies -- and want to add that practicing breathing exercises (even when you're not overtly anxious) helps many people. Try the 4-7-8 breath, at least twice a day . . . And it can be available to you when you need it (those times of anxiety.) see: http://www.Drweil.Com/drw/u/vdr00112/the-4-7-8-breath-benefits-and-demonstration.Html.
