A member asked:

I just had a colposcopy done, my doctor said he seen a lot of abnormalties, does this mean i have cervical cancer?

No: Many conditions from infections to inflammation alone or other conditions can cause the cervix to appear normal at colposcopy. Most commonly a doctor would biopsy any abnormalities he thought represented cancer and at a minimum repeat the pap smear. The most common abnormalities are inflammation and precancerous or dyplastic changes rather than overt cancer.

Not necessarily: Culposcopic abnormalities can range from different colored cells to unusual vasculature to unusually shaped cervical openings. Clearly you need to sit down with your doctor and have a clear discussion of findings and plans. Good luck.
