Fungal infection: Valley fever is from spores of coccidioides immitis entering the body through the lungs. This is a fungal infection that is usually seen in deserts of the southwest us and central south america. Valley fever usually goes away without treatment, but you may need to be treated with an anti-fungal if you have a weakened immune system.

Coccidiodomycosis: Coccidiodes immitus is a dimorphic fungus (may exist in either a yeast or mold form) which exists in the U.S. In a limited but expanding geographic distribution. Originally cases were recognized as common in the san juaquin valley and were given the name of valley fever. Most people have self-limited disease, but this can be a very bad actor, partic in immune compromised persons.

Most will never know: Many (maybe more than 50%) never knew they had it. For those who become symptomatic and seek treatment it seems like a few weeks to months of pneumonia like sx with prominent fatigue and joint discomfort.

Yes.: You are referring to the fungus coccidiodes immitis (cocci for short) which causes the lung disease coccidiomycosis sometimes referred to as valley fever. It is common in the central california valley and southwest. The infection is often mild and not diagnosed, but it can leave nodules, scarring or cavities that can appear on chest x ray. It can disseminate and cause serious disease in some.
