Yes.: You are referring to the fungus coccidiodes immitis (cocci for short) which causes the lung disease coccidiomycosis sometimes referred to as valley fever. It is common in the central california valley and southwest. The infection is often mild and not diagnosed, but it can leave nodules, scarring or cavities that can appear on chest x ray. It can disseminate and cause serious disease in some.

Yes: Valley fever refers to the fungus that causes coccidioidomycosis which occurs in the central valley of california. It occurs in the desert, sonoran life zone which extends into arizona, new mexico and west texas.

Valley Fever: Valley Fever/ Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection found in desert soil in New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, San Joaquin Valley (California) & southern Arizona as well as parts of Mexico, Central & South America. Dx is via serologic tests for coccidioidomycosis or cultures.
