Coccidiodomycosis: Initially can cause a pneumonia as the arthrospores are inhaled from the environment although many infections are asymptomatic. In a small number of patients, dissemination can subsequently be diagnosed in a variety of possible places including bone and cns. A chronic lung infection may also occur.

Valley Fever: Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection found in desert soil. There may be no sx's or mild sx's in 60%. Sx's: cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, low fever, night sweats, headache, muscle/joint pain, rash, weight loss.Disseminated Dz) can lead to meningitis or pneumonia. Dx is via serologic tests for coccidioidomycosis or cultures.
