Arthritis of the hip: Pain in the groin area and down the anterolateral aspect of the thing, stopping at the knee is the classic presentation of arthritis of the hip. There are other diagnoses (pyriformis syndrome, etc.) but they are not best fits with your description. Limited internal rotation of the hip affected is a cardinal diagnostic sign. It may be inflammatory if young, and degenerative, if old.
