Yes: Although the peak in diagnosis of type 1 diabetes is in childhood, nearly half of persons diagnosed with type 1 diabetes are diagnosed after the age of 18. Some adults who have type 1 are misdiagnosed as having type 2 and do not end up on Insulin until they fail treatments with oral (by mouth) diabetes medications.
