When does a baby's immune system develop?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

In utero: The immune system develops in the fetus and is functioning at birth. Passive maternal protection is provided by transfer of antibodies across the placenta and in the breast milk. The developing immune system reaches mature functioning sometime in the second year of life.
