Most ovarian cysts: Are benign and resolve on their own. Sometimes bleeding occurs into the cyst causing enlargement and or pain. These can rupture and resolve. Rarely a ruptured cyst causes internal bleeding requiring surgery. Rarely cysts are tumors either benign or malignant. The different types are distinguished by ultrasound exams. Sometimes surgery is necessary to figure this out.
