Don't isolate: If you have a cross bite you probably have multiple other occlusal irregularities. In children we widen narrow upper jaws with expansion appliances. In adults, surgical assistance is required. The surgery is usually done in office, and the two halves of the upper jaw are separated from each other and from other bones to permit expansion. Recovery is similar to after wisdom tooth extraction.
