I've had braces on for 4+ years now. the surgery was to correct a cross bite. how long do braces normally stay on after reconstructive jaw surgery?

Jaw surgery: The post-surgery orthodontic period can vary depending on the type of surgery, position of the jaws and stability during healing. This time is usually between 8-12 months, but in more complex cases can be longer.

Depends: Depends upon the surgery, the extent of the jaw movement and the amount of tooth movement achievable prior to the surgery. The stability of the segments after surgery also affect this. Your time frame does not seem out of line though.

Varies: Sometimes surgery done near beginning of Ortho Rx, sometimes within 6 months of completion of Rx. Please discuss this w your Orthodontic Specialist. I'm a bit concerned about your time in appliances, it's considerably longer than average.
