Does fluoride in the water supply increase the likelihood of fluorosis in babys and children?

No: If you live in a community where Fluoride has been placed in the municipal water supply, it has already been provided at the optimum and safe level. In general, too little Fluoride and you get cavities more easily. Too much, and fluorosis can occur. Your water supply should be perfect assuming you don't use some type of home filtration system or process.

No.: Fluoridated water has very small amounts of fluoride, .7 ppm (.7 parts per million). This level is so small that it will not cause fluorosis. Some ground water, or well water, has naturally occurring Fluoride that can be significantly higher in concentration and has been implicated in fluorosis. Check with your dentist or water supply company regarding Fluoride concentration in your local water.

Possibly: Florosis is a result of too much flouride administered (in the water, toothpaste, school, dental visits). Need to develop a program to injest optimal amount of flouride annually that is benefial to prevent tooth decay.

Yes and no...: Total concentration of Fluoride is the determining factor. As a rule, normal fluoridated water supplies do not pose a problem. Studies show that many foods and liquids have Fluoride (based upon where they were produced or bottled). This resulted in reduced amount of suggested Fluoride supplements. Consider all sources of Fluoride intake, but don't worry about water supply as problem source.

Unlikely : Water in municipal water supply is carefully checked for proper levels of fluoride, chlorine, and bacteria. It is extremely unlikely that fluorosis would be an issue now.
