Several possibilitie: In patients with "pre diabetes" - borderline blood sugars either fasting or after eating - metformin has been shown to decrease the likelihood of developing diabetes. Metformin is also used in woman with polycystic ovarian syndrome. In these patients it can stimulate ovulation.
