My friend's doc tells him to stop taking diabetic med because of his 6.3 a1c, but mine tells me to continue 1000mg metformin even though mine is 6.2.

Hmm.: Complicated question. Would need to know more, but in general metformin is well tolerated, inexpensive and very effective. In general i would tend to continue meds if fasting bg was still elevated and diet and exercise weren't making big strides. Stopping it if numbers all looked good is not unreasonable.

More info!: Need more info to answer the question correctly. Neither of you are in the normal range for the a1c. Your doctror may be trying to keep you from getting full blown diabetes, or now has you well controlled. As for your friend cannot answer.
