Need a balanced diet: Vegetaianism by itself does not provide any benfits. A person needs to maitain a balanced diet, and in the case of vegans ensure adequate intake of vitamin b12, vitamin d and calcium. Keepin a healthy weight and regular exercise are just as important. Not consuming saturated fats, refraining from tobacco and limiting alcohol intake are imporant for all.

Hard to demonstrate: Despite all the talk and promotion, the really big prospective studies that control for the other healthy habits of vegans / vegetarians have failed to show any benefit in terms of longevity or protection from any major category of illness. Vegetarians need to supplement for vitamin B12 and usually iron, calcium, vitamin D, iodine and some others. Choose based on accurate information.
