Yes: Vegan is always healthier than vegetarian which is healthier than omnivore (the most common) diets. You don't need any animal or dairy products in your diet after childhood. Just be sure to take B12 supplements because B12 is the only vitamin found only in animal products. As for calcium, eat plenty of leafy greens. Vitamin d - unless you live in the tundra, the sun is best. Protein --> beans.

Two good sources of information are dr.mcdougall.com and nutritionfacts.org. Both give lots of research on the benefits of a plant-based diet.

Is a vegan diet and better than a vegetarian diet?

Not the strict vegan: A vegan, ovo-vegetarian, lacto-vegetarian, and lacto-ovo-vegetarian are all types of vegetarians. Because some things (calcium, vit.D, vit.B12, protein) are harder to get if a vegetarian eats no egg or dairy, a vegan has a much harder time finding all the nutrients he needs to stay healthy. However, a lacto- or ovo-vegetarian must be wise enough not to overeat fats from yolks and milk (butterfat).

Can a vegan or vegetarian diet can reverse arteriosclerosis?

Better options: Despite a great deal written about the supposed health (as opposed to moral) benefits of the vegetarian / vegan diets, the most recent very large study in england showed no difference from meat-eaters in longevity or any category of disease. To reverse / control atherosclerosis, manage risk factors, eat sensibly as you like best, and especially get into serious physical fitness.
