Child dependent: Most formal schooling does not begin until a child is 5 years of age. However, introducing a 3 or 4 year old to a preschool setting can be very beneficial in many ways. They learn to socialize and interact with other children their age. This socialization is a very important part of child development. I think age 3 or 4 is an appropriate age to introduce a child to preschool.

Either. : Three or four years old is a good time to start preschool. Socialization skills and learning to be separated from parents are healthy for a child's development.

Some preschools : take toilet-trained 2 1/2-year-olds. 3-5 is the time to learn pre-academic skills. Readiness depends on the child's emotional, social, & self-help as well as cognitive skills. Here's a nice checklist: http://www.babycenter.com/preschooler-ready-for-school
