Strep throat: Symptoms may improve within 6-8 hours after taking penicillin and feel a lot better within 24 hours, at which time one is no longer contagious.

Resolution: It usually resolves within a week. Hopefully you are taking antibiotics so that you don't develop serious complications. Complications can include infection of middle ear, sinuses, tonsils, skin & blood; scarlet fever, inflammation of the kidney (glomerulonephritis) & eventually rheumatic fever.

Can strep throat be penicillin resistant?

No, but...: Group a strep, the bacteria that causes 'strep throat' is still universally sensitive to pcn. However, other bacteria can cause pharyngitis and acute tonsillitis, as well as many viruses. If you are not getting better, would get back with doc and see if you need a full culture or evaluation for other causes such as mono(caused by ebv virus and can sometimes give false positive result strep test).
