Ask: There are many signs and symptoms that you or your dentist can observe. Your dentist might see several signs but these are not entirely conclusive such as unusual wear on your teeth, scalloped tongue, linea alba (white line) on your cheeks, mobility in teeth, pain to touch of chewing muscles. Symptoms include headahces, tired feeling in jaw muscles, temp sensitive teeth etc. Ask your dentist.

Teeth grinding: Ask someone you know if they hear you grind your teeth. Do you wake up with a sore jaw or sore teeth? Sometimes this is an indication. Have you been stressed? This is the most common cause. Visit with a dentist and they can check for signs of wear on the teeth from grinding. All this should help.

Do: You have stiff or sore cheek muscle in the morning? Do your upper jaw joints (TMJ) hurt? Does your bite feel off in the morning for a few minutes? Has anyone ever said you grind your teeth? Has your dentist notice unusual wear on your teeth? Think about these questions and see your dentist.

Ask...: Ask your spouse or someone that is near you when you sleep. Often they can hear it. Your dentist will also be able to see signs of wear on your teeth if you do. Often people may not necessarily grind their teeth but instead clench. They may not show wear on the teeth but have soreness in the facial muscles in the morning.
