Most: Like in any medical field, many dentists have something they emphasize in their practice. Unlike medicine however, there are not as many specialities in dentistry--only 6 and some sub-specialities. Some general dentists study treatment of grinding/clenching, while others study other treatment / condition. Most dentist can tell, but how soon a dentist catches the "signs" depends on their training.

Difficult sometimes: If there is enough wear on your teeth, a dentist/hygienist should be able to ask the right questions about it. A person can be grinding and there may not be enough evidence to make an informed opinion. Often, symptoms may have to appear first in order to research your problem.
