Give it time: Striking an object with the knee can damage the bursa under the kneecap which could cause it to thicken and remained inflamed. Ligaments can suffer small tears and may take several months to heal. Impact against the bone itself can cause damage which will gradually improve with time. Give it time and these conditions should improve.

9 months: A plain xray is inadequate for some things. If you have 'excruciating' pain after 9 months you need a better ortho exam and probably an MRI. I suspect you have a torn ligament which wouldn't shoe on a simple xray.
