As little as a day: Jaw surgery usaually can be completed in a day after obtaining records and planning the surgery. Orthodontics may be required to get teeth in proper postion to perform the surgery. Need to see an oral surgeon for a consult if interested.

3-4 years: These types of problems require the coordination between a dentist, oral surgeon and orthodontist. Although the surgery is only one part, it is the braces that may prolong the treatment.

Depends.: The typical orthognathic surgery lasts only a few hours. However, there is also a procedure for growing the jaws called distraction osteogenesis. This would like take a few weeks as the jaw is typically moved/grown at about 1mm per day + consolidation time. In either case, it will take many months for orthodontic setup prior to your surgery.

3-6 hours: The real answer depends on where the deformity lies and what operation is being done to correct the deformity. If it's only lower jaw advancement, that takes about 3-3.5 hours. If it's a combination of upper and lower jaw surgery, it's more like 5-6 hours. Of course, that does not include the 18-24 months of presurgical and postoperative orthodontic treatment required to obtain a correct bite.

Depends: There are so many variables that surround the problem: 9mm of overjet is not very uncommon. The solution depends on the age of the patient, and whether or not the problem is related to skeletal abnormalities, dental abnormalities or both. The surgery portion of treatment is short (hours), the orthodontic pre-surgical treatment (and post surgical) take the longest, and depend on many factors.

Surgery or total Rx: Total time in Rx (Orthodontic and Surgical) will range from 18-30 months, depending on the complexity of your malocclusion. Time in the OR will vary depending on whether surgery is one jaw or two jaws, and the complexity of the case. Everyone's different. Start with an examination by a qualified Orthodontist and ask to see the OralSurgeon on his/her team for advice.

Agreed: The answers by the other surgeons here are all accurate. However since there are so many variables, the best answer to this and other questions should be directed at your orthodontist and oral surgeon who will be actually involved in your case.
