A member asked:

I had a tia and i was diagnosed with pfo. my doctor suggests me to close it he say its better die in an infarct than live with a stroke if it happens. do you agree?

Best to close: Usually risk benefit analysis favors pfo closure, particularly endovascular methods.

Depends: If you are young and relatively healthy then you should survive a surgical procedure. Anticoagulation may also be an option to prevent stroke. My best recommendation however is to get a second and perhaps third opinion first and then make up your mind. You may be surprised by the differences of opinon. Make sure that the hospital and doctor where the surgery is has a good rating.
