Reassurance: Tonsillectomy is a very painful operation, requiring at least 10 days for recovery depending on your brother's age. If there is no post-operative hemorrhage (1% of cases), then treating the postoperative pain with a good narcotic and drinking plenty of fluids is all that is necessary. Keep reassuring him that he will be better in about 10-14 days. Antibiotics are rarely necessary.
