Strep or viral cause: Inflamed tonsils or tonsils infection can be a strep throat or a viral infection. Strep throat is caused by bacteria and needs to be treated with antibiotics. Viral infections usually go away on their own, without treatment. Tylenol, (acetaminophen) motrin, or other pain and fever medicine can help. The doctor can use a "rapid test" to check for strep at his office; and can recheck if symptoms persist or worsen.
