Do you really need to get surgery for having flat feet?

Flatfeet: Not always. If u get pain relief with orthotics than u don't need to. But if the pain your having is severe and u get no relief from any conservative care than surgery is an option.

Its one option: But by no means the only option. Nor is it always necessary. A low arched foot can be otherwise normal and, more importantly, painless. If the condition is severe and causes pain, it makes sense to use custom orthotics first to stabilize the foot and relieve pain. When there is pain and conservative measures fail, then surgery is to be considered a viable option. No pain? Don't operate.

Flat feet : No - as stated , orthotics can help tremendously. If a doc is pushing a surgery agenda seek another opinion . Ask questions - lots of them . Good luck.
