Both: Currently there three basic classifications: asperger's, autistiism, & pervasive developmental disorders. But these are somewhat ill-defined & each encompasses a broad spectrum of levels of function. Since " mind-blindness, "lack of theory of mind & difficulty understanding concepts even if able to remember large amounts of data underlie all autistic disorders, no matter the cognitive level, the lumping is an attempt to get funds & services for all.
