How is autism classified into different levels?

Individuality: Autism spectrum disorder is the generic umbrella term covering children with autism. Because it is a spectrum there are more severely affected and less severely affected people ..So high functioning and low functioning. Every patient is unique and each one has differing strength and weaknesses. The diagnosis code covers them all at this time with one code...299.0 i hope that helps.

In the DSM IV, ASD's: Are autism, Asperger syndrome & pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specifed. These are not modified by mild, moderate or severe, nor by level of cognition. Part of the as definition is iq>70. "high functioning autism", not a diagnostic category, describes those who have an iq >70.. The dsm-v has autistic disorder for all types & social communication disorder if stereotypies are absent.
