Pump failure: Your heart is many things, but is primarily a pump for the blood in your body. If there is a heart failure, there can be back flow , from the left side of the heart into the lungs. When there is enough back flow (4 or more liters worth), it starts to leak into the spaces between the lung and chest wall, and sometimes into the air spaces as well.
