Allergic rhinitis: For prophylaxis, i recommend singulair, (montelukast) 10 mg at bedtime daily to be started at least 2 weeks before the season and continued until the season is over. Alternatives will be the otc usual antihistamines or prescriptions of their derivatives. In addition, nasal antihistiamine sprays are also available as well as steroid nasal sprays. Please ask your doctor.

Multi-prong approach: The treatment approach for allergies is avoidance of the triggering allergy, medications and allergy injections if necessary. Nasal steroid sprays are the most effective treatment. Singulair (montelukast) has about the same effectiveness as antihistamines. A board certified allergist is a great resource to provide an individualized treatment plan just for you.
