Pain, redness, pus: If a wound gets infected, you will usually see swelling of the wound, redness developing around the wound and spreading outwards, and increased pain with the wound. Eventually when the pus builds up enough inside the wound in can open spontaneously and start drainage out, but this is usually later in the process. You can also get body symptoms such as fevers and fatigue in big infections.
