Lethargy & confusion: Severe sepsis/septic shock often causes lethargy and confusion. Many symptoms will be a result of the underlying infection; the most common infections causing septic shock are: pneumonia-shortness of breath, cough, chest and/or abdominal pain; uti-pain/burning on urination, abdominal pain; intra-abdominal infection-nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea.
