What should i do at home to treat an attack of diverticulitis?

See your doctor.: First and foremost, if you suspect that you are having an episode of diverticulitis, you need to see your doctor to determine if you are a candidate for outpatient treatment. If so, oral antibiotics and a liquid diet are advisable until the pain +/- fever resolves.

Initially: Take your temperature and document it, go on a liquid diet only, if the pain/fever doesn't resolve or gets worse see your doctor immediately or go to an er. If diverticlitis is diagnosed and no abscess or perforation is found, low fiber diet for 6 weeks, antibiotics for 2 weeks and reassess after 6 weeks. If these are recurring frequently give consideration to an elective sigmoid colon resection.
